The valuation office
has the task of valuing commercial property within the Country
for the purpose of charging rates. The office has records
going back to 1850 showing the owner and occupier of land
in a given area. Records covering the 26 counties are divided
by County, Rural districts and finally Townlands.
The Records have the following information:
Townland Address,
Occupier name,
Description of property,
Acreage of holding,
Rateable value and
Reference to the position on a Valuation map
If you know the exact address of an Ancestor you may able
able to trace back and find that the property was held in
that family for some generations. You would then be able to
find the Full name
of the occupier, a valuable piece of Genealogical information.
If you don't know the exact address, but at least know a townland,
then you can search that area for a particular period in the
hope of finding your Ancestor.
The office holds an Archive of old maps that will let you
find the exact location of property.
