Registry
of deeds
This office is charged
with recording transactions relating to property in Ireland
since 1708. The Deeds for a property are not held here, rather
a Memorial containing the essential information from the deed
is recorded.
For the purposes of
researching your ancestors there are two possible routes.
The first is the Lands
Index (from 1709 – 1946). If you know the exact location of
an ancestors property, you may search through this index arranged
by County and Town land, or for urban areas by City/Town and
Street to find the first Grantor and Grantee
The other possibility
is the Names Index, which will shows names of the Grantee.
It is important to note that this is the second person in
a land transaction, eg: Grantor, who sells\gives\mortgages
to Grantee and may be difficult to find out. It may be the
major landlord, but more likely a middle man would buy land
from the major landlord of the area and sublet it. The best
approach may be to inspect Griffith's Valuation to find the
Lessor that occurs frequently, as these are either landlords,
large farmers or middle men who were subletting at the time.
