  Using the National Library of

   Ireland

Todays Date:

Based in Kildare street, this building houses many records including;

  • Census Information
  • Parish records for baptisms and Marriages
  • Griffith's Valuation
  • Tithe Applotment Books
  • The National Library newspaper collection covers titles published from the mid- seventeenth century to the present day. Irish titles are the primary focus of the collection.

To see where exactly it's located in Dublin's City Centre see the Dublin Map which shows it and other locations useful for researching your Ancestors.

On entering, take the stairs to the first landing and to your right is the genealogy room. This has a number of sources on open shelves, forms on which to fill out request for a specific piece of information, and perhaps most importantly, members of staff available to advise you on your research. You will need an ID badge before moving up one floor to the main reading room. A plan of the reading room is shown below.

Opening Hours for Main Reading Room

Monday-wednesday 10am - 9:00pm

Thrusday - Friday 10am - 5:00pm

Saturday    10am - 1:00pm

Sunday not open

Filling out the request form

You will need to do this to get any information other than some general indexes and texts for  researching  on open shelves in the genealogy room. To do this you needs the reference number for the piece of info you are looking for. Then take this to the main desk on your right when you enter the Reading Room

Viewing Micro fiche

Many records are on Microfilm. The microfiche room is off the main reading room, to your left on entering. You should first pick a desk, each numbered with a brass plate, then put this number on your request form and hand it in at the counter in the main reading room. Return to the numbered table you choose, and an assistant will bring your requested microfiche to you. Be aware, on some of the busier days, on Saturday and in the Summer Months you may need to wait 20 minutes or more to receive your roll.

Each viewer has instructions on use, and you can focus the text a little. Once you are finished, you roll the fiche back onto it's reel, replace it into the box it came in and return it to the enquiry desk in the reading room. It is essential that you do this, so your card can be marked to indicate that the requested item has been returned.

Another possible format is Microfiche. Rather than being on a roll, it is a single sheet that you can place in a fiche viewer. Girffith's Valuation for example is on Mircofiche, where as the Parish Records and Tithe Applotment books are on Mircofilm.

You can go to National Library's own site http://www.nli.ie where they have some information available on-line
