  Using the Land Registry

Todays Date:

This office is charge with recording transactions relating to property in Ireland since 1892. It is closely linked to the Registry of deeds whose records date from 1708. To find out more about it, click here

It contains information on property held in documents called folios.

These hold

  • Information on the property
  • A reference to a Registry Map
  • The registered owner
  • And Burdens relating to the property (such as rights of way etc…)

In 1891, The Registration of Title Act, was introduced, so that all land bought out under the Land Purchase Acts had to have it's title registered. So any transaction relating to land from this date on will have been recorded.

As an exanple of when a records might occur consider when a tenant bought land under the Land Purchase Act. Or transfer to different name; father to son, or upon death, transfer to next-of-kin

There is an index per county showing the registered owner of property in that area. But from a genealogical point of view this won't be very useful unless one of your descendants is still in possession of the same plot of land. But this is very unlikely.

There are two paths for you to take.

1. If you know very specifically the area to within a few acres, where you ancestors lived (you could find this from Index to Griffith's valuation, from more details click here), then look at the registry map for that area to find the folio number for that location. Then track back in the folio through all previous owners of the land till you hopefully come upon your ancestor.

2. The alternative is to request a search to be carried out in a particular area for a given surname. The more specific you can be the quicker and cheaper the search will be. But generally you will need to have a surname and civil parish. Even better if you know the town land within the parish.
