In the 15 page overview of the Rebellion of 1798 the author outlines the background to the conflict, while introducing the personnel who comprised the leadership of the United Irishmen. He looks at the mid and immediate causes of the war. The remainder of the book deals with the various battles that were fought, the antagonists and their backgrounds and the description of the action on the day of the battle with the reported numbers of casualties on both sides.
All in all there were over forty engagements in the entire island of Ireland including the battles fought in Antrim and Down.
What makes this book different and most enjoyable is the fact that the author chose to examine the family background and descent of many of the main protagonists. Their subsequent fate was also considered. This human interest angle ensured that this remarkable book is now a rare commodity. Irish family names has only twenty of this book remaining.
