In the overview of
the Rebellion of 1798 the author outlines the background to
the conflict, while introducing the personnel who comprised
the leadership of the United Irishmen. The remainder of the
book deals with the various battles that were fought, the
antagonists and their backgrounds and the description of the
action on the day of the battle with the reported numbers
of casualties on both sides.
What makes this book different and most enjoyable is the fact
that the author chose to examine the family background and
descent of many of the main protagonists. Their subsequent
fate was also considered.
This booklet was designed
as a forerunner to the main book Ireland 1798 The Battles
and was published in 1997. The purpose was to build up an
interest in the history of the whole 1798 period. Like the
book that followed it deals with people and their motives
for becoming embroiled in the terrible events of the period.
